More weblogs roll with Tim's latest appearance on his crusade for the Semantic web; I caught wind of the latest rounds of it through 0xDECAFBAD's attempt at describing the StarTrek world where everything is grokked by your Mac. I'm here to say it ain't gonna happen, guys.

It ain't gonna happen not because we will never get to where you can just ask your Apple to get you two tickets to the Rangers game, because I think we will; I think that day is inevitable but not because the web became semantically structured -- it will always be broken, it will always be done by bored teens, psittacine marketteers, single moms and loose-cannon hip-shot self-pundits like me, and the conan librarians will always roll their eyes and wish it were any otherwise at that part of it.

Nay me hearties, what we're needing here is not structured documents online, but we do need to stop staring at the sex-organs of the creature and realize that the bulk of the body is going to be under the radar, a sub-strata of RDF relationals, invisible threads of clarifying semantic infrastructure, likewise ad-hoc constructed post-hoc ad nauseum by most everyone, but it will be on the side-band, not in the mainstream web.

Yes my friends, the digital future will see ever more outcroppings of Semantic Mycelium shot through the damp decay of the humic web: A subliminal network body of hyperlink dublin core hyphae chaining data-mining bit-feeding webservice sensors together with the haute-école design-craft meme-factory sporangial emitters and chaotic gametangia of the blogs. And they will be red ... with white dots on the cap ...

Even Gene Roddenberry never expected that part.
