Main Event: Cott vs Cage
Tuesday, September 7, 2004

Online at the Internet Archive, the 1963 Other Minds broadcast of John Cage being interviewed by a young and rambunctious Jonathan Cott ...

This program is notable particularly for the challenging stance of the host -- an unusual document that provides many moments of amusement as Cage parries Cott's thrusts with a veritable tai chi practice of music theory. The exchange over the quality of Cage's Concert for Piano and Orchestra vs. Schoenberg's Piano Concerto is one of the funniest exchanges in the history of new music broadcasting.

Jon is said to excuse his adversarial stance by pleading the ignorance of youth, being then a lad of only 19, but I say sorry Jon, I was likewise all of 19 or 20 when I interviewed John for CKLN-FM, and had no trouble whatsoever in being professionally respectful, accommodating and civil.

Mind you, IIRC, I think actually had more trouble to keep from standing there dumbstruck and staring with my mouth hanging open; fortunately, John Cage, ever the gentleman, twisted my innane questions into serendipidous opportunities to fill my tape with an hour of most marvellous musings and incisive insights that have stuck with me to this day.
