DRM Primer
Monday, December 9, 2002

This is for those who wonder why this whole digital rights
management thing is such an open sore to those of us inside the
technology...I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled againcashreg.jpgAs a primer to what DRM means and why it's so important, and why it's not likely either consumers or even the artists themselves can stop it, InfoWorld offers us this Steve Gilmore interview with EFF co-founder
John Perry Barlow:

The content industry has
done a marvellously good job of getting people to believe that there's
no difference between a song and a horse. If somebody's singing my
song, I think that's great -- they haven't stolen anything from me. If
somebody rides off on my horse, I don't have anything. And that is
theft.

And if you want to talk real
theft, John Barlow points out how the heart-strings "feed the
artists
" argument is a hard pill to swallow when total artist
royalties paid out by RIAA member companies amounts to less than 5% of
their total sales
.
