almost 2 years ago social networking design responded:
Social networking is a term that was used prior to its use on the Internet. Basically a social network is a community of people sharing common interests. It enables a gathering of like minded people to develop greater awareness and knowledge of their mutual business, hobby and personal interests.

yes, and Java was an island in the pacific, ruby was a gemstone, a web was a trap used by spiders or a complex topology of interdependencies; and a network could mean the rolodex of a travelling salesman or a graph of tunnels in an ant colony. time was when 'host' meant both the allies and the enemy, a demagogue was literally a 'popular leader' and what is now a demagogue was, in 1776, called a democrat -- semantic shift is not only a reality, it is pretty much inevitable.

In that context, I suppose one might think that 'social network design' was what the relentless meddling matchmaker Dolly Levi does for her profit and amusement in the musical Hello Dolly!, and in that sense its not an entirely enviable occupation ;) On the other hand, tho, I would hope the modern meaning would entail careful use-case analysis and human factors design issues in the computer-human interface attempting to facilitate the societal model in the virtual space, and in that I'd hope the field is burgeoning if only because of the great dearth of workable examples to be found in the wilds!

quite serendipitously, a provocative article by the 'Father of VR' on the ugly turn the 'social networks' have taken: "those who control it today are ravishing journalism, culture and art while they herd the population into clans" http://bit.ly/97Wfj1

I'd dismiss him as a tin-foil hat quack if it weren't for his credentials ... and the particular astuteness of his observations.
