YouTube - Content, Life & Everything

YouTube - Content, Life & Everything: Redwood has transformed itself from a print based agency to a truly multi-platform content agency. This video explains the world of Content 2.0 from a customer's point of view, the opportunities that we now have to reach them, and what the future holds.
Inspire, Inform, Entertain -- we interrupt these 91 million hours of Facebook programming for a brief message we might call "Web Marketing 301, Beyond the Couch-Potato", a brief survey of trends and measures about this electronic skin we are building with our social new-media.

Status: Lock Down Your Heart

Gary and Kee-May have yanked their kids from school today, in protest of the Lock-Down Drill.
TeledyN: Lock Down Your Heart: "there are infidels at the gates ready to rend it asunder -- we decided to yank our kids from the school today, in protest of the Lock Down Drill being foisted on our kids in the name of anti-terrorism. We're going to take them shopping instead, as it seems that for all the commercialism and materialism that may deck the malls, that world is still nonetheless within the seasonal message of goodwill and hope that maybe, just maybe there is the slimmest chance that some child-in-arms Prince of Peace may someday make all such terrors of young hearts a thing of the past. Let's have a drill to lock-down into that concept, eh?"

Peace Shirt Coalition

MySpace: CB for Peace - MySpace profile for Peace Shirt Coalition
The really most odd part about the story behind the kids behind this website is how, despite having met all the proper criteria, their high school shut them down "for causing trouble" -- their myspace page lives on, though, as does their message, so if you're on that site and want to show them some support, please do go over and try to counter-balance the (many) commenters trying to jam them.

Video: Michael Moore cut this scene from Sicko because no one would believe it

Sicko: Out-takes - Michael Moore cut this scene from Sicko because no one would believe it.
A film from a place where everyone is equal, where families vacation with murderers, where sewage is fuel. Sci-Fi? No, but it is so unbelievable, Michael Moore chose not to include it in his film because he thought it would shock people way too much -- sure enough, I cited this clip on the Sun-Times Community Blog website and received heaps and heaps of nasty abuse from other readers.

My Photos - Mobile Uploads

Another copy!

What are the chances of TWO copies showing up in the delete bins in Owen Sound? But there they were - I had phoned the desk clerk last night, and yes, I would have driven out to get it right then and there, but he said it was gone - fortunately he didn't check all that well because we fished this second copy out in about 10 seconds.

I hope it plays!

Conspiracy of Science - Earth is in fact growing

Time to rip up all the geology books: Neal Adams thinks he knows why Eurasia and Canada have the same trees, and why the oldest fossils are all found on dry land. It's because the Earth is growing ...

tip: Neil's argument is a great deal more convincing so long as you stick with this film and don't check out his other YouTube posts ;)

Comment: The Secret is Bull Shit

The Secret is Bull Shit: "First off, Danny, Jeff el al, it is not a 'theory' it is a recipe; do you know why cakes rise? Do you REALLY know? if so, then you are some kick-ass physicists who truly deserve a lot of letters after your name, and perhaps you can then get on to some other big mysteries like 'WTF _is_ electricity anyway?' and subscribe to Jack Sarfatti's blog so you can argue with him.

Jane Goodall on what separates us from the apes

Jane Goodall on what separates us from the apes: Jane Goodall hasn't found the missing link, but she's come closer than nearly anyone else. The primatologist says the only real difference between humans and chimps is our sophisticated language. She urges us to start using it to change the world.
2003 talk by Jane Goodall on where we differ from the other primates, and where we don't, and how we shirk our great responsibility for being the master communicator that we are.

MindHabits - Stress Relief Game

MindHabits - Stress Relief Game: We drew on research showing that certain people have attentional biases toward socially threatening information, so they automatically focus on any sign of rejection or criticism from others, which in turn perpetuates their sensitivity to rejection and heightened tendency to experience social stress.
Here's a friendly bit of mind-hacking for your self-amusement: "This patent pending technology is the result of a decade of research by scientists at McGill University, one of the world???s top medical research centers. The software ??? based on the emerging science of social intelligence ??? helps you practice the mind habit of focusing on positive social feedback, which in turn reduces stress levels"

A New Marriage of Brain and Computer

A New Marriage of Brain and Computer - Google Tech Talks September, 21 2007.

ABSTRACT: Brain and computer were wed mid-twentieth century by the McCulloch-Pitts model neuron and Hodgkin-Huxley equations for digital firing in biological neurons. Since then, brain neurons, synapses, firings and networks have been considered analogous to electronic switches, states and circuits in classical computers. But despite extraordinary advances and bold predictions, consciousness seems ever more elusive.

Nuclear Smoke and Mirrors

Nuclear Smoke and Mirrors: "Harper, EAC’s Wayne Henuset and AECL’s mandarins won’t want the public to connect the dots too quickly. Harper’s minority government might not weather a heated controversy over Canada importing nuclear wastes while having a huge unsolved nuclear waste problem of its own ... If it became widely known there was a hidden agenda about an international nuclear waste dump in Canada, then all the hype about clean nuclear energy providing economic development might begin to fall on deaf ears. Besides, the ACR-1000 reactor is only a design on paper and hasn’t been reality tested. Without the $200 million granted to AECL from the Harper government for design work, adding to the $17 billion dollars of subsidies since 1952, there’d be no chance at all of this project ever seeing the light of day."
If you still think the AECL and OPG are all above board on what they're selling us for their Deep Geological Suppository, follow this link. Come to think of it, for example the Organic Cooled Reactor in Manitoba, the Candu Boiling Light Water Reactor in Quebec, the Slowpoke Energy System, the Candu-3, the Candu-9, and the Maple Reactor at Chalk River, has the AECL ever been right (or even profitable) about anything they've done?

YouTube - A Vision of Students Today

A Vision of Students Today: a short video summarizing some of the most important characteristics of students today - how they learn, what they need to learn, their goals, hopes, dreams, what their lives will be like, and what kinds of changes they will experience in their lifetime. Created by Michael Wesch in collaboration with 200 students at Kansas State University.
nobody wanted to believe "Why Johnny and Janey can't read (and why Mr/Mrs Smith can't teach", and even more didn't want to even read it, or hear about it. Now here's a video done by the kids themselves, not surprisingly, arriving at precisely the same point. Notice the absence of smiles, and the preponderance of anachronistic futilities like the $100 textbook.

YouTube - To Hear Your Banjo Play

YouTube - To Hear Your Banjo Play
When you tell folks how, should the future ever discover what we sold out on them, they'd never forgive us, you get stares of disbelief. "What ever could you mean?" they say, unable to fathom a world without CD players and iPods.

"Infernal machines," John Philip Sousa called them. Prepackaged Pop for Now People, "The soundtrack of over-consumption," said Matthew Herbert.

Well, here's a glimpse of the last shadows of that earlier world, the 1947 Alan Lomax films out of the field recordings made before radio forever changed these voices. You can't tell me you would rather walk around with 'beans' in your ears.

Markov Hornpipe

Markov Hornpipe
The Markov Hornpipe is one of an early batch of studies sparked by a comment by Will Henry on how he would intuitively predict the subsequent bars of a traditional tune. Yes, it is a midi 'rendering' (volunteer performers are welcome to apply) and yes it does maybe get a bit wobbily in the middle although I've come to like those slip-jig wobbles, and no, it is not 'computer music' or 'serialism', it is more akin to Prokofiev's notebook method -- I wish I had more resources to explore the idea, but experimentally, I'm pleased with the result, it did what I wanted it to do and in a really rather listenable way. John Cage said his part was in asking the right questions and I maybe could have phrased a few of them better, but bygones are bygones, I've learned from the experience and moved on.
